Cooking Under the Redwoods: My Seasons at Mendocino Grove

For the past two seasons, I've had the pleasure of serving as the resident chef at Mendocino Grove, a glamping destination nestled among the majestic redwoods of Northern California. This unique setting has allowed me to combine my passion for farm-to-table cuisine with the natural beauty of the Mendocino coast, creating memorable dining experiences for guests seeking both adventure and comfort.

A Culinary Retreat in Nature

Mendocino Grove offers a modern camping experience where guests can immerse themselves in nature without sacrificing comfort. Our fully outfitted safari-style tents provide a cozy retreat after a day of exploring, and communal spaces like the Meadow Commons foster a sense of community among campers. It's in these shared spaces that I've had the opportunity to connect with guests through food, offering meals that reflect the rich agricultural heritage of the region.

Friday Night Camp Cookout Series

One of the highlights of our weekly schedule is the Friday Night Camp Cookout Series. Each Friday, I craft a menu that showcases seasonal produce sourced from local farms, bringing the flavors of Mendocino directly to our guests' plates. From grilled fresh-caught fish to hearty vegetable stews, each dish is prepared over an open flame, enhancing the rustic camping experience. These communal dinners not only nourish the body but also create a space for guests to share stories and build connections under the starlit sky.

Pop-Up Dinners and Special Events

In addition to our regular cookouts, we've hosted a variety of pop-up dinners and special events that celebrate local culture and cuisine. One memorable evening was the "Dinner and Movie Under the Stars," organized in partnership with the Mendocino Film Festival. Guests enjoyed a three-course "Hunter & Gatherer" meal I prepared, featuring locally sourced ingredients, followed by an outdoor screening of a feature film. Events like these blend entertainment with culinary delight, offering guests a truly immersive experience.

Collaborations with Local Musicians

Music is an integral part of the Mendocino Grove experience. We've had the pleasure of hosting talented artists who provide live performances around the campfire. For these events, I design menus that complement the musical ambiance. For instance, during a performance by country singer-songwriter Travis Howard and friends, we served slow-braised beef on polenta with fresh greens, creating a hearty meal that resonated with the soulful music.

Community Engagement and Support

Our commitment to the community extends beyond our campsite. We've organized benefit dinners supporting local organizations like the Noyo Food Forest, where guests can enjoy a three-course meal, participate in activities like wreath-making, and listen to live music, all while contributing to a meaningful cause.

Looking Ahead

As we prepare for the upcoming season, I'm filled with excitement for the new culinary adventures that await. We're planning to introduce more themed dinners, collaborate with local artisans, and continue our tradition of integrating the natural beauty of Mendocino with exceptional food experiences. I look forward to welcoming returning guests and new faces to our table, where we can share in the bounty of this remarkable region.

With gratitude and anticipation, Chef Chantelle
